Human Research Protection Program

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville fosters a research environment that promotes respect for the rights and welfare of individuals recruited for, or participating in, research conducted by or under the auspices of the university. In support of this, the university has established a Human Research Protection Program (HRPP). The HRPP, in partnership with its research community, is responsible for ensuring the ethical and equitable treatment of all human subjects in research conducted under the university’s auspices. Human Research Protection (HRPP) includes institutional leaders, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and staff.

HRPP Vision Statement

  • To ensure the rights and welfare of human research participants by promoting the responsible conduct of research and encouraging diversity and inclusion.
  • To facilitate excellence in research by using flexible and data-driven approaches in providing high-quality, comprehensive, and consistent reviews of research involving human subjects.
  • To act as an approachable body in facilitating communication with researchers by providing collaborative guidance and knowledgeable support on research involving human subjects.
