Faculty Fulbright Application Program

This year the faculty Fulbright deadline is later than usual: September 16, 2019.

Therefore the Office of Research and Engagement will offer a special Fulbright application program this summer. Our new program includes a sequence of interactive workshops, reviews by Fulbright fellows on campus, and small writing groups, all in addition to our standard application review.

We encourage all Fulbright applicants to participate. We especially encourage faculty members who have not yet considered a Fulbright application for this year to take advantage of this program. It is not too late to start!

Workshops in May

We will offer two specific Fulbright application workshops in May. These sessions will provide advice on two pressing questions.

Session 1: Where do I go?
A review of Fulbright opportunities, because you can apply to only one country.

Session 2: How do I get there?
A review of Fulbright application requirements, because Fulbrights are unusual.

Click desired session to register.

Each session will include examples and exercises and will be offered twice. Participants will receive hard copies of successful Fulbright applications.

If you have already selected a country or attended a workshop in your college, or if you are unable to attend either of the workshops in May, you should still register for the remainder of the program. (See below.)

Reviews by Fulbright fellows in June

We will match and connect you with a Fulbright fellow on campus who will serve as an “application mentor” based on the country you propose, not on your academic discipline. The Fulbright fellow will address general matters only.

The program includes three distinct and limited steps: 1) You will send the Fulbright fellow a brief summary of your Fulbright proposal; 2) You will arrange to meet once with the Fulbright fellow to discuss your summary; and 3) You will send the Fulbright fellow a full draft of your application and will receive brief general comments.

Monthly writing group meetings in July and August

We will organize small writing group meetings in July and August. Participants will review complete drafts of the Fulbright application, including drafts of the important letter of invitation from the host institution. The primary goal is to support the submission of complete applications that respond to the criteria explained in the workshops and the reviews provided by the Fulbright fellows.

Groups will be determined by discipline as much as possible. Dates of the meetings will be decided by the groups.

Please register your interest in this program by sending an extremely brief email to Alan Rutenberg at arutenberg@utk.edu. Alan will remain available for individual consultations, questions, and final reviews of all Fulbright applications.
