UT Names New Governor’s Chair for Quantum Devices

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, welcomes Deep Jariwala, a leading scholar in quantum materials and next-generation electronic devices, as UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair for Quantum Devices. Jariwala, who will hold a joint appointment in UT’s Tickle College of Engineering and at ORNL, will be officially joining both institutions in January 2027.

The Governor’s Chair program works to align the strengths of UT and ORNL to advance research and talent development and to attract exceptionally accomplished researchers to the region.

“Recruiting Governor’s Chairs and other preeminent faculty is central to our efforts to elevate the University of Tennessee, Knoxville,” said Chancellor Donde Plowman. “This appointment strengthens our ability to grow in emerging areas like quantum science and engineering while leveraging our partnership with ORNL to create opportunities for students and faculty that no other university can offer.”

Jariwala, who joins UT after nine years at the University of Pennsylvania, studies novel materials that can be used to create the chips of the future for computing, sensing, and electronic devices that use artificial intelligence. With his appointment, UT will have faculty working in basic materials research, chip design, and real-life applications.
