The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, welcomed Sethuraman Panchanathan, the director of the National Science Foundation, to campus, where he announced a new major research award and celebrated the launch of a statewide initiative to advance mobility led by UT.
UT has received a prestigious Materials Research Science and Engineering Center from the National Science Foundation to develop sophisticated artificial intelligence and computational tools and deploy them in the design and synthesis of next-generation materials in two areas: quantum materials and materials for extreme environments.
UT Research Park celebrated the groundbreaking of Innovation South, which will be the new home of UT’s Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility. UT will occupy a 40,000-square-foot high bay and laboratory space designed to support teams of faculty, students and their industry collaborators who will work together to conceptualize, prototype and test sustainable composite materials for advanced manufacturing applications.
UT is a core partner on a new NSF Engines Development Program award aimed to create a diverse innovation and talent development hub that secures US competitiveness in next-generation manufacturing and supply chain logistics, supports closed-cycle manufacturing to reduce waste, and increases efficiencies across sectors including automotive, aerospace, energy, food and beverage, and materials.
UT and Volkswagen Group of America Inc. have announced plans to accelerate their longstanding research partnership through new programming. Plans include expanding PhD and undergraduate opportunities and adding new research projects.
Cecile Grubb is a Volkswagen PhD Fellow, part of a program that provides funding and real-world research experience for graduate students.
