Molecular Beam Epitaxy
The Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facility provides services related to materials synthesis with the use of MBE equipment. The MBE system includes low-temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy capabilities and is used to grow transition-metal-oxide thin films.
These films are highly crystalline and have applications in the development of solar-energy materials, photo-catalytic materials, and superconducting materials. They are also important for fundamental studies of emergent phenomena in condensed matter systems. The system is equipped with a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope for in-situ atomic-resolution imaging of the oxide thin films.
Assisted help is billed in addition to the regular instrument rate. Rates for instrument time indicate self use. Any operation of the instrument by staff will incur an additional charge for staff assistance. Requests for staff assistance must be booked in advance of reserving instrument time.
