Molecular Beam Epitaxy
The Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facility provides services related to materials synthesis with the use of MBE equipment. The MBE system includes low-temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy capabilities and is used to grow transition-metal-oxide thin films.
These films are highly crystalline and have applications in the development of solar-energy materials, photo-catalytic materials, and superconducting materials. They are also important for fundamental studies of emergent phenomena in condensed matter systems. The system is equipped with a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope for in-situ atomic-resolution imaging of the oxide thin films.
