UT advances place-based innovation initiatives to strengthen the Greater Knoxville innovation economy. Multiple co-location spaces are in the planning and development stages. Each initiative is designed to spark organic collaborations between UT faculty, staff, and students, and our partners’ scientists, doctors, engineers, strategists, and other experts.

UT and the UT Medical Center Pursue Scientific Breakthroughs, Community Impact in Center for Precision Health
The Center for Precision Health includes the Medical Device Innovation Core and the Spark BioHub, and other units. It houses UT faculty, UT Medical Center physicians, and community partners to facilitate transdisciplinary collaboration that will improve lives.
Spark Innovation Center Launches New BioHub
The Spark Innovation Center is expanding its footprint and reach with the development of a dedicated life science initiative to support start-up companies focused on health and wellness.
University of Tennessee and Volkswagen Drive the Future of Mobility
Volkswagen opened its first North American innovation hub at the UT Research Park at Cherokee Farm in 2020. UT faculty and students collaborate with Volkswagen scientists on technology to make vehicles lighter, batteries last longer, and materials more sustainable.
Innovation South Facility Opens
Innovation South, which opened in 2024, is an 85,000-square-foot multiuse facility that includes a high bay and laboratory space for UT faculty, students, and industry collaborators to conceptualize, prototype, and test sustainable composite materials.
