UC to Pay $500K to Settle Allegations of Double Dipping

The San Jose Times reported in December that the University of California will pay nearly a half-million dollars to settle allegations that UC Davis scientists received research money from two different federal agencies for the same project by submitting “false and misleading statements” in grant applications.

According to a UC Davis spokesperson, the work was in the materials science field and involved a 5-year, $1.1 million Department of Energy grand and a one-year, $100,000 National Science Foundation grant.

Though the university admitted no wrongdoing, they paid $499,700 to the agencies and agreed to expanded training related to federal grants. The researchers were not identified.
