Accessing CITI Online Compliance Training

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Go to http://citiprogram.org.

Register with a user name and password (or log in if already registered). You may make up a CITI user name and password or use your UT log-in information, just be sure it is something you will remember.

Complete registration and, where indicated, use officially assigned UT NetID and e-mail address (no aliases, gmail, etc.).

VERY IMPORTANT. Please read carefully: You MUST “Affiliate” with “University of Tennessee Knoxville” (not “University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center Knoxville” or any other UT institution). You may also affiliate with another institution but their requirements may be different so please take your training through “University of Tennessee Knoxville” or we have no record of your completion. – CITI has made some changes to their institutional affiliation process. If you have any problem locating the correct institution please contact oretraining@utk.edu.

Select the course/s you wish to take: NOTE: Q1 (IRB/Human Subjects) training is NOT the same as Q3 (Responsible Conduct of Research training). You need Q1 training when you submit an IRB protocol. You must take Q3 for training on Responsible Conduct of Research.

Q1: IRB/Human Subjects Research options (choose one: Biomedical or Social & Behavioral) –

Important to note:

  • Do not register for the options “IRB Member,” “IRB Chair,” ”Students conducting no more than minimal risk research,” or “Other.” These course options do not satisfy the training requirements that are necessary at UT. Our CITI website is in the process of being revised to reflect these changes.
  • The S&B course options “IRB Member” and “IRB Chair” are for faculty only who are serving as an actual IRB Member at either the departmental or campus level or as the IRB Chair, of which there is only one.
  • If you take either of these courses, above, and are not faculty actively serving as an IRB Member (departmental or campus) or IRB Chair, you will have to go back and take the appropriate Basic/Refresher course in Human Subjects Research.

Your CITI IRB completion/grade report must accompany any IRB protocol you submit at UTK.

If you have questions regarding IRB training or related issues, please contact the Compliance Officer for IRB, or the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) staff.

Q2: IRB Chair (Only if you are/will soon be the IRB Chair)

Q3: Responsible Conduct of Research options (at present, this is required for NSF and NIH grants)

  • If you are working on an NSF or NIH award with the RCR requirement, provide your PI with a copy of your CITI RCR completion/grade report.

Effective 25 November 2014, the CITI Program will replace its collection of existing RCR basic courses with one new basic course. This change is being implemented to update, strengthen, and simplify the delivery of the RCR content.

Learners who have started or need to take their RCR basic course prior to 25 November 2014 should complete and pass their entire course before that date. Otherwise, they will be unable to finish the partially completed course and will have to start over with the new RCR basic course.

Q5: Conflicts of Interest mini-course

When you register for the COI course, there are multiple modules. The modules you are required to take are:

  • CITI Conflict of Interest Course – Introduction
  • Financial Conflicts of Interest: Overview, Investigator Responsibilities, and COI Rules
  • Institutional Responsibilities as They Affect Investigators

There is also an optional module that you may take but it is not a requirement:

  • Conflicts of Commitment, Conscience, and Institutional Conflicts of Interest

When you have satisfactorily completed all of the course requirements, you will see a link to print out a completion/grade report.  You will not receive a “certificate” from UT or CITI, so you might want to keep a copy of this report for your records.

For questions or problems with accessing this training please contact oretraining@utk.edu for assistance.

Q6: Export Control

There are 5 modules under Export Control. Be sure to complete them all and take the tests as required (the UT specific module does not have a test).

  • U. S. Export Controls – General Overview
  • Export Administration Regulations (EAR)
  • The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)
  • The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)
  • The Preventive Export Control Program at the University of Tennessee

When you have satisfactorily completed all of the course requirements, you will see a link to print out a completion/grade report.  You will not receive a “certificate” from UT or CITI, so you might want to keep a copy of this report for your records.
