Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair Terry Hazen.

Andrea RochaRocha was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for its “Women@Energy” series, detailing inspirational women in STEM fields and is meant to highlight what inspired the women to pursue their careers.

The overall goal of the Women@Energy program is to get women to consider STEM-related courses in college and in the workforce.

“As a young girl, I was always fascinated by the natural world around me. I wanted to know why and how things happened,” Rocha told the DOE. “When I started college, I followed my passion by pursing a degree in the biological sciences.”

Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment.

The appointment was announced this week by College of Engineering Dean Wayne Davis.

Hazen brings an impressive set of environmentally related credentials with him to the new position. In addition to being the joint UT–Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair for Environmental Biotechnology, Hazen works with the Center for Environmental Biotechnology; directed investigation and recovery efforts surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill; and was a senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the Microbial Communities Division, the Center for Environmental Biotechnology, and the Ecology Department.
