The UT Knoxville Sigma Xi Chapter begins a series of professional development panels for graduate students (and interested undergraduates) with a discussion about graduate research proposals to the National Science Foundation. The panelists will discuss the following awards:

Fulbright Scholar to Speak Monday
Eddy Nurtjahya, associate professor of Universitas Bangka Belitung, Indonesia and Fulbright Scholar, will speak Monday, February 1 on using native plant species in mine reclamation. The talk, presented by the UT Knoxville Chapter of Sigma Xi, will be in Room 206 Claxton Education Building from 3–4 p.m. NIMBioS hosted the meeting and Nurtjahya’s talk.
Sigma Xi Graduate Student Research Presentation Competition
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is the international honor society for all types of science and engineering. The UT, Knoxville Chapter of Sigma Xi will be sponsoring a graduate student research presentation competition on the morning of April 13 during Research Week. There will be multiple cash awards for the best presentations. Graduate students can apply for the competition at https://webapps.utk.edu/GraduateResearch/GradResearchSigmaXi. These are 15-minute presentations with 5 minutes for questions.
The application deadline is noon, April 1, 2015.
Video of Indrikis Krams’ Sigma Xi Lecture
The University of Tennessee chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, in partnership with the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) hosted a special lecture by Dr. Indrikis Krams (Biology, Tartu Univ., Estonia, and Daugavpils Univ., Latvia). His lecture, titled “Reciprocal altruism and empathy in birds,” focused on recent studies from his laboratory on cooperative behavior in songbird species.
