Any institution that is under the purview of the Public Health Service Policy and/or the Animal Welfare Act is required to have an Attending Veterinarian (AV) on staff. The principal responsibility of the AV is to develop and implement an effective program of veterinary care for animals used in research and teaching. This program has multiple components including preventive medicine, proper use of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers; perioperative care; euthanasia; diagnostic procedures; and provision of veterinary care, emergency care and aspects of animal husbandry.

New Policy Establishes Framework for Safety in Teaching Laboratories
The UT Knoxville Biosafety Program approved a Teaching Laboratory Policy last fall that establishes a new framework for the use of biological hazards in teaching laboratories or other experiential learning environments as recommended by an appointed task force of instructional faculty and staff.

Policy Reminder: Minors in Laboratories and Shops
The Minors in Laboratories and Shops safety policy went into effect two years ago, was recently updated, and is found in the online safety manual. It was developed in response to an increase in high school students on campus. The policy covers individuals less than 18 years of age who are in engaged in university-sponsored activities in laboratories and shops.

Reminder: UT Smoking Policy Prohibits Use of E-cigarettes
To protect the health and safety of University students, employees, and visitors; to promote a healthy and safe work, educational, and living environment; and to comply with the Tennessee Non-Smoker Protection Act and other applicable state laws, the University prohibits smoking in, and near all entrances to, all University buildings.
The UT policy on smoking prohibits the inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying any lighted cigar, cigarette (including an electronic cigarette), pipe, or other lighted tobacco product, in any manner or in any form, in any building owned or operated by the university as well as any vehicle owned, leased, or operated by the university.
