Office of National Scholarship and Fellowships, said this was a record-setting year for UT in the Fulbright Student Program, with the largest number of awards offered (eight) and semifinalists (18) in UT history.

“I’m thrilled for the students and for UT. Having this much participation and success in the Fulbright competition says a lot about how our students are increasingly seeing the Fulbright as an important and attainable pursuit,” Seidler said, noting that the last year saw 42 students—the most ever—apply for Fulbrights.

Suzanne Lenhart, professor of mathematics, was honored with the 2017 SEC Faculty Achievement Award, the SEC announced this week.  Lenhart is a passionate advocate for women and other underrepresented groups in STEM fields. The SEC award recognizes professors from the 14 Southeastern Conference schools who have outstanding records in teaching and scholarship.

UT, sophomore Blaine Ziegler and freshman Emma Sopcak were awarded $5,000 scholarships from the Today show and PurePoint Financial as part of the Rokerthon 3, weatherman Al Roker’s journey to five universities across the US to set world records.

UT researcher Devon Burr, associate professor of earth and planetary sciences, co-authored a paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience describing the surface of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Turns out that the grains covering the surface act like clingy packing peanuts—they become electrically charged and cause particles to stick to them.


Troy Lane, associate vice chancellor for public safety and chief of police, was named Director of the Year for 2016 by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators for the Southeast region.

Graduate education at UT earned high marks in the new U.S. News and World Report rankings, with programs in business, law, engineering, information sciences, nursing, and education listed among the best in the nation.
