Any institution that is under the purview of the Public Health Service Policy and/or the Animal Welfare Act is required to have an Attending Veterinarian (AV) on staff. The principal responsibility of the AV is to develop and implement an effective program of veterinary care for animals used in research and teaching. This program has multiple components including preventive medicine, proper use of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers; perioperative care; euthanasia; diagnostic procedures; and provision of veterinary care, emergency care and aspects of animal husbandry.

IACUC Processes Streamline Work for Researchers
A recent change to the procedures of the UT Knoxville Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) will allow some amendments to protocols to undergo administrative approval by the IACUC Chair or a designated veterinarian through Veterinary Verification Consultation rather than review by the full committee. This change will streamline the approval process for such changes, allowing PIs submitting amendments to protocols to see approval faster. Researchers who have a need for expedited approval or an interest in understanding which types of amendments fall under the updated approval process may contact the IACUC office (utiacuc@utk.edu, 865-974-5547) for further information.

The Office of Research Integrity presented seven faculty members with Service Excellence and Leadership Awards during a special celebration at Tyson House Thursday afternoon.
This is the first year the office has given out these awards to faculty members who showed particular dedication in their field toward compliance, integrity, safety, and commitment to the university’s shared governance model.
