DoD recently published the attached solicitation entitled Defense Enterprise Science Initiative. DESI is a new program that supports use-inspired basic research performed by university-industry teams in order to accelerate the impact of knowledge on key defense challenges and on DoD acquisition programs.

DESI is seeking proposals on the following 4 specific topics:

  • Power Beaming
  • Hihly-maneuverable autonomous UAV
  • Soft Active Composites with Intrinsic Sensing, Actuation, and Control
  • Metamaterial-based Antennas

The proposal deadline is 28 Feb 2018.  DoD anticipates making 4 awards of $750K annually for a period of 2 years, with an option for a third year of additional funding.  Note that each proposal must include at least 1 university and 1 industry member, and the university partner must receive at least 50% of requested funding.  Also note that not every topic above will necessarily be granted an award.

Cultivating Cultures for Ethical STEM (CCE STEM)

CCE STEM solicits proposals for research that explores the following: ‘What constitutes ethical STEM research and practice, and which cultural and institutional contexts promote ethical STEM research and practice and why? Successful proposals typically have a comparative dimension, either between or within institutional settings that differ along these or other factors. CCE STEM research projects will use basic research to produce knowledge about what constitutes responsible or irresponsible, just or unjust scientific practices and sociotechnical systems, and how to best instill students with this knowledge.
