The UT-area Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) recently adopted an updated charter and several associated operating procedures.
- IBC Charter & Bylaws (Note: Appendix A of this document delineates roles/responsibilities of UTK administration, the IBC, Biosafety Officer, principal investigators/laboratory supervisors, department heads, and laboratory personnel)
- IBC Registration, Reporting, Review & Recordkeeping Procedures
- IBC Event Escalation Procedures
- IBC Laboratory Audit Procedures
- IBC Training Procedures
The resulting written program, which has been vetted through the UT Office of the General Counsel, aims to establish (or reiterate): 1) IBC’s authority, scope, and purview; 2) roles and responsibilities of the UT administration, IBC, Biosafety Officer, and academic/research stakeholders; 3) core oversight and management practices relative to the safe and compliant use of biological hazards; and 4) transparent documentation of the IBC’s bylaws, processes, and expectations. Those who are currently approved to work with biological hazards, as well as those who may work with them in the future, are strongly encouraged to review these documents. Additionally, this information should be shared with laboratory staff and students as applicable.
