His work empowers teachers and students to use data and digital technologies to explore scientific questions in new and meaningful ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData is everywhere\u2014in our communities, classrooms, and daily lives\u2014but we\u2019re still learning how to make the most sense of it, particularly for educational uses,\u201d said Rosenberg,\u00a0the Haslam Family Professor and an associate professor of STEM education. \u201cMy work focuses on helping teachers and students use data not just to find answers but to ask more meaningful questions and to better understand how scientific knowledge is built.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Journey\u00a0to UT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After receiving his PhD in educational psychology and educational technology from Michigan State University, Rosenberg was drawn to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, by the opportunity to teach and conduct research in both science education and educational technology. Now in his seventh year at UT, he teaches science methods courses for prospective science teachers and data science education courses for data analysts and researchers. His teaching and research are closely intertwined, focusing on how educators and learners can explore data to make scientific thinking more relevant and participatory.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Influencing the world of education with data science\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Dp6wf3svXY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Reimagining data analysis<\/h2>\n<p>Rosenberg is partnering with K\u201312 educators across Tennessee on <a href=\"https:\/\/projectcredible.com\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/projectcredible.com\/\">Project\u00a0CREDIBLE<\/a>\u00a0(Creatively Reimagining Engagement with Data in Biology Learning Environments), funded by the National Science Foundation, to help\u00a0teachers and students\u00a0engage with data in new ways using\u00a0a\u00a0Bayesian data analysis approach.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than treating data as a source of absolute answers, the approach invites students to think in terms of probability, confidence, and evidence\u2014skills that foster more nuanced scientific reasoning. The project integrates\u00a0new technologies such as data visualization tools to make data analysis more accessible in everyday classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>In one example, students sampled water\u00a0quality data from a creek behind their school, analyzing\u00a0the\u00a0health\u00a0of\u00a0the waterway and communicating their findings to broader audiences with nuance and rigor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen students start thinking about data as degrees of confidence rather than right or wrong answers, it changes the way they engage with science,\u201d Rosenberg said. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen\u00a0teachers make small shifts in how they talk about data, and those shifts can open up richer, more thoughtful conversations in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg\u2019s research extends beyond the classroom\u00a0to issues around science education and educational technology policy.\u00a0For instance, he explores how publicly available data like social media posts can illuminate trends in education policy and practice.\u00a0His work\u00a0has shown how positive online conversations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/eprint\/PU5QG2GVAMKTBMEMRQSY\/full\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/eprint\/PU5QG2GVAMKTBMEMRQSY\/full\">help support reforms<\/a> like the Next Generation Science Standards and how schools\u2019 social media practices can raise questions about <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.3102\/0013189X221120538\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.3102\/0013189X221120538\">student privacy and data ethics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12712\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12712\" class=\"wp-image-12712 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/research.utk.edu\/oried\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Rockstar-Josh_Rosenberg-Inline.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Haslam Family Professor and an associate professor of STEM education Joshua M. When he arrived in 2018, few universities offered educational data science courses. With\u00a0strong support\u00a0from colleagues and leadership, he helped launch one of the first graduate certificate programs in the nation focused on data science in education\u2014positioning UT as a national leader in an emerging field.<\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg\u2019s research has been supported by more than $9 million in federal funding, including a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored the e-book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/mono\/10.4324\/9780367822842\/data-science-education-using-joshua-rosenberg-emily-freer-ryan-estrellado-isabella-vel%C3%A1squez\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/mono\/10.4324\/9780367822842\/data-science-education-using-joshua-rosenberg-emily-freer-ryan-estrellado-isabella-vel%C3%A1squez\"><em>Data Science in Education Using R (Routledge)<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0which\u00a0has\u00a0been accessed more than 250,000 times.\u00a0Most recently, he served as a committee member for Developing Competencies for the Future of Data and Computing: The Role of K\u201312, a consensus study conducted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine<em>\u00a0<\/em>to advance national conversations about the K\u201312 curriculum and the place of data science and artificial intelligence within it.\u00a0He serves as associate editor of\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education<\/em> and on the editorial boards of several other leading journals.<\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg hopes to expand opportunities for community-engaged data science education, connecting data science students with nonprofits, schools, and government organizations.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0also developing educational technologies that make complex data analysis approachable for all learners.
