The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a nonprofit federation of 75 scholarly organizations, dedicated to the advancement of all fields of learning in the humanities and the social sciences. The longest running program in the organization’s portfolio, the ACLS Fellowship program supports outstanding scholarship with the potential to make significant contributions to knowledge within and across fields. Fellowships provide salary replacement for scholars who are embarking on six to twelve months of full-time research and writing.
For the 2021 fellowships, ACLS focused its resources exclusively on early-career, non-tenured scholars, many of whom are facing extraordinary obstacles to advancing their research in the wake of the widespread disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in the history of the program, half of the 2021 awardees did not hold tenure track positions.
ACLS will again radically revise its main fellowship program next year, limiting eligibility to untenured scholars, whether in tenure-track positions or not, but no more than eight years post-PhD. Because this revised ACLS opportunity fellowship is available to those who may not have previously applied for fellowships, the Office of Research and Engagement is hosting a workshop to serve as an introduction to fellowship applications, including not only basic information but also examples and advice.
