Chandra Myrick wins ACUHO-I Dissertation of the Year Award
Chandra Myrick, assistant vice chancellor for Student Life and executive director for University Housing, was recently awarded the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) Dissertation of the Year Award. ACUHO-I is the leading organization for campus housing and residence life professionals, serving more than 17,000 professionals from around the globe. This award is designed to recognize exceptional work by doctoral students and encourage the highest levels of scholarship, research, and writing to contribute to the college housing profession.
Inclusion in the Arts: Grant to Help School of Music Incorporate More Diversity in Curricula
The inclusion of diverse viewpoints in musical curricula can be a challenge for educators—one that is often made harder by a lack of funding. Hillary Herndon, associate professor of viola, was recently awarded a grant from the Sphinx Venture Fund—a fund that invests money in a wide variety of music areas to aide in transforming the future of cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts. Funding will be used to celebrate diversity and feature underrepresented composers and create more diverse music education resources
Eady and Harjo Feature in Star-Studded Literary Gala
Poets Cornelius Eady and Joy Harjo will appear alongside Stacey Abrams and Oprah Winfrey at this year’s Poets and Writers In Celebration of Writers virtual gala, to be held March 25, 2021. Cornelius Eady, a nationally renowned, award-winning poet, will join the Creative Writing faculty of the University of Tennessee Department of English in fall 2021, serving as the John C. Hodges Chair of Excellence. Joy Harjo, the previous Hodges Chair of Excellence at UT, is currently in her second term as United States Poet Laureate. The Poets and Writers gala will open with a poem from Harjo. Eady will perform as musical guest, with his band.
