UT Appoints Tyvi Small Interim Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Engagement

University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Interim Chancellor Wayne T. Davis announced that he has appointed Tyvi Small interim vice chancellor for diversity and engagement. Small currently serves as executive director of talent management, diversity, and community relations in UT’s Haslam College of Business.

“Tyvi has been instrumental in recruiting, developing, and supporting student success since joining UT in 2007,” said Davis. “At Tyvi’s core is a passion to help students succeed. He has spent his entire career working with young people and inspiring them to be the best they can be.”

The new position will be focused on student success. Small will lead efforts to coordinate existing student success programs and diversity initiatives across the university that support students, including those from underrepresented communities, veterans, students with disabilities, first-generation students, and students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Fall Dean’s List Now Posted

The fall 2018 dean’s list has been posted online.

To qualify for the dean’s list, an undergraduate student must earn a term grade point average of 3.80 to 4.00 (summa cum laude), 3.65 to 3.79 (magna cum laude), or 3.50 to 3.64 (cum laude). Students must complete at least 12 credit hours, not counting work taken on a satisfactory/no-credit basis, to be eligible.

Suresh Babu to Lead UT-ORNL Bredesen Center

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have selected Suresh Babu as the next director of their jointly operated Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education.

Babu will retain his position as UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair for Advanced Manufacturing when he assumes his new role on January 3. He will be replacing Lee Riedinger, who is retiring at the end of January.

“Dr. Babu has worked extensively with both UT and ORNL through his Governor’s Chair position, and we’re excited about him taking on this new role,” UT Knoxville Interim Chancellor Wayne T. Davis said. “He is a nationally recognized expert in the development of advanced materials and advanced manufacturing and has helped us emerge as a leader in those critical research areas.”

Dean of Libraries Steve Smith Elected to SPARC Steering Committee

Dean of Libraries Steve Smith has been elected to the Steering Committee of SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition).

SPARC is an international coalition of academic and research libraries dedicated to advancing the open sharing of research outputs and educational materials in order to democratize access to knowledge, accelerate discovery, and increase return on investment in research and education.

Smith sees the SPARC appointment as “a great opportunity to forward the cause of open access and making scholarly research available to everyone, everywhere, at any time.”

Kelly Hewett Named Journal of International Marketing Editor in Chief Designate

Kelly Hewett, associate professor of marketing at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business, will be the next editor in chief of the Journal of International Marketing. The American Marketing Association recently announced Hewitt’s four-year term will formally begin on July 1, 2019.

“It is a great honor to have been selected as the incoming editor of Journal of International Marketing,” said Hewett. “I am thrilled to be able to leverage my broad-based experience in both marketing and international business, and as both an academic and a practitioner, in helping shape the future of the Journal. My goal is to build on JIM’s legacy in the discipline. I am committed to publishing high-quality substantive research in international marketing that bridges the gap between theory and practice.”
