ORE Offers Many Channels to Gain Research Information

Access to up-to-date information about research issues is a key component in advancing UT Knoxville’s research agenda as it seeks to establish itself as among the nation’s top 25 public research universities.

The Office of Research & Engagement offers UTK faculty an array of communications channels designed to allow them to locate funding opportunities, follow research trends, develop and hone their proposal-writing skills, and learn about changes in research and compliance policies. ORE communicates internally through paper, electronic newsletters, targeted LISTSERVs, brochures and other publications, and social media.

News & Opportunities is an information-driven paper newsletter offering news about funding and compliance policies, internal opportunities, changes in research administrative processes, and other topics of interest to the research/sponsored program community. Printed on distinctive green paper, it is mailed to all faculty and staff on the UTK campus. It appears every two weeks during fall and spring semesters and less frequently in the summer.

Awards & Recognitions is a newsletter listing the awards processed by the Office of Sponsored Programs in a two-week period and also passing along news of faculty and high-achieving graduate and undergrad students who have been recognized for scholarly accomplishments, offices, and other significant honors from outside the university. Previously published on yellow paper, the newsletter has recently been reformatted for an e-newsletter, which will appear every two weeks. NOTE: Faculty are invited to submit news of their own honors and accomplishments, as well as those of their exceptional students to dockeryb@utk.edu.

A variety of LISTSERVs target specific subsets of UTK faculty and research-related staff. Jim Lloyd (jlloyd@utk.edu) publishes seven dedicated listservs that bring agency funding opportunities to  investigators who work in appropriate fields. One of the lists focuses on solicitations that limit the number of submissions the university can make. Elizabeth Burman(eburman@utk.edu) manages two lists informing faculty of engagement news and opportunities, and STEM outreach.

The Office of Sponsored Programs (mcampo@utk.edu) uses the ORALERT listserv to keep research administrators informed of changes in OSP and agency processes. OSP also publishes an online newsletter that treats research administrative processes in more depth. ORE maintains other specific lists related to research development and faculty development.

ORE maintains an encyclopedic research web presence with definitive information about all aspects of the sponsored-program enterprise, including internal awards, training, compliance, funding opportunities, and proposal development. The office maintains the Research Capacity Catalog, which provides summaries of all research programs on the Knoxville campus. ORE also makes available on its web site Research Development & Grant-Writing Newsletter by Academic Research Funding Strategies LLC.

ORE provides the campus with news, reports, and information on UT Knoxville research metrics, as well as brochures and other publications that interpret the work of the office to faculty, staff, and external audiences.
