To inform the effective deployment of technological innovations in transportation systems, UT experts are producing economic impact analyses, informing the development of public policy, and supporting advances in built infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A transportation system supported by sound economic and public policy and safe, well-designed infrastructure fuels economic growth and enhances competitiveness. In one long-term project, researchers developed and installed a next-generation polymer composite for bridge decks and are using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1424-8220\/22\/11\/4089\">smart sensing technologies to monitor its real-world performance and durability<\/a>. Other faculty and students are exploring how to use <a href=\"https:\/\/ascelibrary.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1061\/9780784485262.123\">ground-penetrating radar<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/cee.utk.edu\/giving-smart-robots-a-boost\/\">underwater robots<\/a> to inspect bridges and other structures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty also investigate infrastructure components that support emerging mobility solutions. One UT team, for example, is focused on developing infrastructure and control methods for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2773153724000094\">autonomous air travel<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other UT faculty and students are developing economic and policy structures that promise to enable future mobility. They are working to analyze and interpret the effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0965856424000302\">vehicle scrappage trends<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/media.rff.org\/documents\/WP_23-33.pdf\">passenger vehicle demand<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/media.rff.org\/documents\/WP_23-04.pdf\">federal fuel economy standards<\/a>, and their work has significant implications for regulations and investments related to <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/acdd85\/meta\">emission reductions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15568318.2024.2311813\">adoption of electric and other alternative fuel vehicles<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0301421522001562\">electric charging infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/ctr.utk.edu\/transportation-policy-finance\/\">advise national and state government entities<\/a>, too. One team from Knoxville and Chattanooga developed research to support the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/rosap.ntl.bts.gov\/view\/dot\/62693\">Tennessee Department of Transportation strategies enabling smart mobility and infrastructure<\/a>. Members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/haslam.utk.edu\/news\/ut-launches-new-transportation-and-logistics-collaborative\/\">Transportation and Logistics Collaborative have advised<\/a> the Tennessee Governor\u2019s Office on infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT partnered with TVA to launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/baker.utk.edu\/research-centers\/cetep\/valley-pathways-study\/\">Valley Pathways Study<\/a>, which evaluates opportunities to pursue economic growth while accelerating decarbonization.
