fuels will facilitate the transition from fossil fuels in more ways than one. Cars and trucks already on the road may soon be able to run on biofuels derived from plants. By researching and developing low-carbon high-performance biofuels and hydrogen fuels, we are&nbsp;building a bridge to a clean mobility future and creating energy options that complement electrification solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT faculty use various methods to understand and improve biofuel production\u2019s environmental sustainability, economic viability, and real-world performance. Researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/crc.tennessee.edu\/\">Center for Renewable Carbon<\/a>, for example, are working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/bioenergy\/articles\/us-department-energy-awards-236-million-support-production-low-carbon\">reduce the overall carbon intensity of sustainable aviation fuel<\/a> by improving biomass cultivation in the Southeast while contributing to a regional <a href=\"https:\/\/research.utk.edu\/iee\/research-areas\/circular-bioeconomy\/\">circular bioeconomy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty from multiple disciplines are exploring the fundamental principles behind efficiently converting plant matter into fuel using catalysts, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlehtml\/2023\/ra\/d2ra07787f\">heat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cbe.utk.edu\/news\/faculty\/trinhs-doe-supported-research-could-bring-big-changes-to-biofuels\/\">bacteria<\/a>. Other researchers are investigating how to maximize the potential of specific plant species, plant components such as lignin, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2024\/ee\/d3ee02532b\">new biorefining processes<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT researchers are exploring fuel cells as additional alternatives to fossil fuels. Researchers use UT facilities in Knoxville and Tullahoma and resources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/content\/fuel-cell-technologies-0\">at Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a> to study next-generation fuel cells, with an emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/smll.202306433\">improving internal membranes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydrogen fuel cells, in particular, hold great promise for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/research.utk.edu\/mobility\/research-areas\/moving-people-goods\/\">US long-haul trucking<\/a>. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/millionmilefuelcelltruck.org\/partners\">partner in the Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck Consortium<\/a>, UT\u2019s ultimate goal is to <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1149\/MA2023-01382255mtgabs\/meta\">increase fuel cell durability and decrease the cost of ownership<\/a>, making hydrogen fuel cells more competitive with conventional diesel systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10vh\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull has-custom-content-position is-position-top-center thoughtHero\"
