We seek to improve the buildings where people live, work, and play; the roads, rails, and trails that connect people and businesses; and the essential structures that keep everyday life running safely and smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT faculty design, deploy, and test novel materials, construction methods, and maintenance technologies. They start with novel materials and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=btgVm0BxoA4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emerging technologies<\/a>\u00a0like additive manufacturing and\u00a0evolve structural design and construction methods\u00a0to achieve greater durability, reduced material waste, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1364032124000297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved energy efficiency<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other researchers focus on community and regional infrastructure design. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tnriverline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tennessee RiverLine<\/a>&nbsp;initiative, for example, connects communities to the riverline ecosystem by making tourism and recreation opportunities more accessible for more people.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT and TVA collaborated to study opportunities for the Tennessee Valley region to pursue economic development while accelerating decarbonization. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/baker.utk.edu\/research-centers\/cetep\/valley-pathways-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valley Pathways study<\/a>&nbsp;provides insights for sustainable infrastructure buildouts and upgrades, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/research.utk.edu\/mobility\/research-areas\/electrification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric vehicle chargers<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UT is leading multiple advancements in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/research.utk.edu\/mobility\/research-areas\/economics-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mobility infrastructure<\/a>. One team from Knoxville and Chattanooga developed research to support Tennessee Department of Transportation strategies for smart vehicles and connected infrastructure. Other researchers are developing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cee.utk.edu\/ut-research-team-creating-eco-friendly-concrete-mixtures\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=UT%20Research%20Team%20Creating%20Innovative%2C%20Eco-Friendly%20Concrete%20Mixtures&amp;utm_campaign=TN%20Today%20-%202024-04-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lower-carbon materials<\/a>&nbsp;and applying novel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ascelibrary.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1061\/9780784485262.123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technologies<\/a>&nbsp;to help cities build and maintain longer-lasting infrastructure. In one long-term project, researchers developed a next-generation polymer composite for bridge decks; they use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1424-8220\/22\/11\/4089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smart sensing technologies to monitor its real-world performance<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty and students also study the infrastructure communities rely on to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ascelibrary.org\/doi\/10.1061\/NHREFO.NHENG-1478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliver energy<\/a>&nbsp;and clean water\u2014and to responsibly deal with waste, wastewater, and storm water. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tnwrrc.tennessee.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tennessee Water Resources Research Center<\/a>&nbsp;at UT has been awarded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cee.utk.edu\/tnwrrc-awarded-1m-support-rural-wastewater-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1 million from the Environmental Protection Agency to help rural Tennessee communities<\/a>&nbsp;improve their wastewater infrastructure.
