energy systems that enable <a href=\"https:\/\/baker.utk.edu\/research-centers\/cetep\/valley-pathways-study\/\">sustainable growth<\/a> with clean, reliable, and affordable energy for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UT faculty and students are developing clean energy solutions across multiple scales, from quantum materials to global power grids. At each step, our researchers are working to improve the efficiency, sustainability, and resilience of energy supply and distribution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development and implementation of sustainable clean energy systems encompass a range of technologies and applications, from energy sources to deployment to commercial and residential application. Research priorities include advancing high-temperature superconducting magnets, <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/2053-1591\/ad36b5\/meta\">plasma-facing materials<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1741-4326\/acb370\/meta\">tomahawk reactor design<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022311524001144\">computational frameworks<\/a> for multiscale modeling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UT faculty are also advancing the next generations of small modular reactors for safe, cost-efficient fission energy. They develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-4362\/4\/2\/28\">new safeguards<\/a> and apply <a href=\"http:\/\/papers.phmsociety.org\/index.php\/ijphm\/article\/view\/3792\">advanced instrumentation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00295450.2024.2338507\">physics-informed machine learning<\/a> to optimize maintenance and operation strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We continue advancing the <a><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/abstract\/document\/10509255\/keywords#keywords\">power electronics systems<\/a> <a href=\"#_msocom_1\">[MM1]<\/a>&nbsp;that enable high levels of renewable energy to be integrated onto the nation\u2019s energy grid. We study distributed energy resources and microgrids to <a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/abstract\/document\/10406585\/authors#authors\">improve performance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S030626192401016X\">increase resilience and energy efficiency<\/a>. Teams are applying machine learning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1996-1073\/17\/12\/2821\">develop effective energy management systems<\/a> for microgrids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Department of Energy has recognized UT\u2019s leadership in power electronics. With a $2.8 million grant, UT will lead seven partners in projects aimed at the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eecs.utk.edu\/ut-awarded-2-8-million-doe-grant-to-modernize-the-nations-electric-power-grid\/\">ultrafast, efficient, and reliable next-generation semiconductor switch modules<\/a> for the nation\u2019s power grid.<a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty also work at the intersection of energy and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.utk.edu\/mobility\/research-areas\/electrification\/\">mobility<\/a>.
