NASA: Early Stage Innovations

The NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) has issued a solicitation entitled Early Stage Innovations (ESI) at this link. ESI seeks basic or applied research to “to accelerate the development of groundbreaking, high-risk/high-payoff space technologies, not necessarily directed at a specific mission, to support the future space science and exploration needs of NASA, other government agencies, and the commercial space sector.”

Only U.S. universities are eligible to submit proposals, but teaming with industry and non-profit organizations is permitted. PIs must be either tenured or on tenure track.

ESI topics are listed below, and a description of each is on pp. 3-16 of the solicitation.

  • Topic 1 – Advanced Coating Technology for Space Fission Power and Propulsion Systems, p. 3
  • Topic 2 – Relative Navigation Algorithms and Sensors for Autonomous Maneuvering in Proximity to Small Celestial Bodies, p. 5
  • Topic 3 – Cross-cutting Technologies for EHF Band Space Applications, p. 6
  • Topic 4 – Extraction of Water from Hard Extraterrestrial Soils, p. 8
  • Topic 5 – Predictive Modeling of Thermal Protection Material Thermostructural Behavior, p. 11
  • Topic 6 – Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic Modeling of Additive Manufacturing Alloy Processing, p. 13
  • Topic 7 – Lightweight Multifunctional Lattice Materials for Space Structures, p. 15

A notice of intent is due by submitted by 2 June, and a proposal is due by 30 June.

NASA/STMD anticipates making 12 awards, each worth up to $500K for up to 3 years.

Please notify Paul Montgomery if you plan to pursue this opportunity.
