Faculty Invited To Present at DTRA Conference

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has invited three University of Tennessee, Knoxville faculty members to display posters at the Chemical and Biological Defense Science and Technology Conference May 12-14 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Gajanan Bhat, Jayne Wu, and Tingting Xu each had abstracts selected for presentation, and the Office of Research and Engagement has offered to provide some travel support to help them attend this conference.  The faculty members will be presenting on the following subjects:

Presentation title: Commercially Feasable Production of Nanofiber Webs by Meltblowing

These webs will be suitable for composite fabric structures for protective apparel and as scaffolds for many applications with appropriate functionalization.



Jayne WuJayne Wu, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science

Presentation title: A Field-Deployable, Rapid Diagnostic Platform for Point of Need Detection of Proteins/Pathogens

This platform will be a low cost, sensitive and reliable on-site device capable of detecting proteins, small molecules, bacteria, and viruses in minutes.  It will provide a simple, sample-in/result-out capability that utilizes standard immunoassay chemistries and is considerably more sensitive and significantly faster than traditional immunoassay (i.e. ELISA) methods.

Tingting XuCenter for Environmental Biotechnology

Presentation title: Development of a Multi-Functional Autonomous Bioluminescent Gene Cassette for the Continuous Biomonitoring of 3D Human Tissue Culture Models and the Acquisition of Real-Time Predictive Toxicity Data.

This research investigated a 3-dimentional tissue culture model using genetically engineered, substrate-free, and autonomously bioluminescent human cells for continuous, real-time toxicity monitoring. Combined with microfabrication and microfluidics technologies, this model can be developed into an ‘organ-on-a-chip’ platform that can closely mimic the microarchitecture and functions of living organs and allow monitoring of human response to chemical and biological toxicants in real-time.

The DTRA CBD S&T Conference focuses on the newest developments in basic and applied research within chemical and biological defense and offers attendees the opportunity to network with other researchers as well as to interact with DTRA program managers.
