The Spring 2018 NIH Proposal Writing Institute (PWI) is a guided proposal development program for UT faculty who intend to submit an NIH research proposal (R01, R15, R21, R03) to one of the standard June or October deadlines. The NIH PWI combines a series of workshops with a sequence of writing prompts designed to lead participants through the process of developing a new NIH Research Plan. Members of the Faculty Development Team (FDT) are also available to provide individualized proposal consultation leading up to submission.
The PWI will be comprised of seven group meetings beginning on January 17 and concluding on April 18. Each session will be held on a Wednesday from 9 a.m.–11 a.m. in A004 Blount Hall. Individual workshop topics will include things like how to select the right R-mechanism for your proposal, how to identify an appropriate study section, the structure of an NIH proposal, how to budget your project, the difference between “significance” and “innovation,” and how to comply with the rigor and reproducibility requirements. The tentative workshop schedule is:
- January 17
- January 31
- February 14
- February 28
- (Spring Break)
- March 21
- April 4
- April 18
The PWI is open to faculty who are eligible to serve as the Principal Investigator on an NIH proposal submitted by UT-Knoxville. Attendees should have a specific NIH-appropriate research project in mind prior to the first session. Identification of a target Institute and prior communication with a program officer is preferable.
Registration deadline: January 10, 2018
