Kimberly Eck, assistant vice chancellor for research development, has joined the executive committee of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) Board. Her new role will see her spend one year as vice president, one year as president, and the final year as a past president.
Eck has served as Chair of the Southeast NORDP Region (SE NORDP) in the past, leading the region to become an officially recognized affinity group, launching a regional meeting series, and creating a regional RD job shadow experience. Over the next four years, she hopes to help NORDP continue to grow and serve its members.
Other staff members in the Office of Research and Engagement hold roles in NORDP.
Missy Jenkins, strategic research initiatives coordinator, is currently the chair of the SE NORDP Affinity group. As the chair, Missy is also a member of the Member Services Committee, and lastly is also participating in the peer mentoring program..
Sharon Pound, strategic research initiatives manager, currently serves on NORDP’s Communications Working Group and the Strategic Alliances Committee. In 2019/2020, she will serve as Communications Chair for the 2020 Conference Committee. She assists with the NORDP listserv and for the past two years has promoted NORDP at the National Postdoc Association’s annual conference.
Jennifer Webster, strategic research initiatives manager, continues her role as NORDP’s NIH liaison, working with research professionals at both NORDP and UT to promote opportunities to work with the agency, as well as passing along items of interest from NIH to NORDP members.
Eck is most excited about a new initiative that will catalogue and describe the typical roles, titles, and responsibilities of research development positions, something that is currently lacking in the field.
“This a complex task that builds on the original research conducted by myself and colleagues and will require substantial input from the NORDP community,” said Eck. “Ultimately, I hope to lead a working group to create a set of guidelines that will be useful to NORDP as well as human resources, administration, and institutional leadership.”
NORDP was established in 2010 to build and connect a community of Research Development professionals at institutions across the nation. It grew from informal connections between research development professionals into a network of over 900 members. NORDP’s mission is to develop and share best practices for attracting and managing research funding.
