The Office of Research & Engagement administers UT’s Radiation Safety Department, which provides a wide range of radiation services and health physics support to the university community. The department oversees the safe and compliant use of x-ray machines, sealed radioactive sources, loose radioactive materials and high-powered laser systems used on campus. The department provides safety training and radiation exposure monitoring to individuals who work with or around radiation for their work or research activities. Researchers interested in using radioactive materials must apply for approval from the Radiation Safety Committee. Application information can be found on our website or by contacting the department.
As a reminder, all purchases of radioactive materials or machines that produce x-ray radiation must be approved by the radiation department. X-ray machines must be registered with the State of Tennessee within 10 days of acquisition for the university to avoid monetary fines.
