For years, Marcus Amos, a second year doctoral student in sport management, has worked to raise awareness about the prolific use of pain medication among college athletes.
He started out speaking to groups at LSU, but the subject was more taboo than steroids. Athletes didn’t want to open up about it. Amos kept on talking.
This Saturday, September 20th, the documentary Locker Room Addiction will air on DirectTV (8 p.m., Audience Channel 239), featuring Amos and his work with college athletes.
“A DirectTV producer contacted me late last year with interest in the topic,” said Amos. “He wanted me to be the lead educator in the documentary.”
Amos is also the founder of Prevention Education for Athletes, which addresses painkiller addiction and overdose deaths among athletes. His commitment to this topic has resulted into several media and news outlets requesting his consultation, ranging from: 60 Minutes, HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, ABC News, ESPN News, and Sports Illustrated.
