Background Information on ORU Analysis Charts
Statistical information is provided for the following currently funded units:
- CEB -- Center for Environmental Biotechnology (includes Center for Biomarker Analysis)
- CITR -- Center for Information Technology Research
- CTR -- Center for Transportation Research
- ISSE -- Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment
- JIAM -- Joint Institute for Advanced Materials
- JIBS -- Joint Institute for Biological Sciences
- JICS -- Joint Institute for Computational Sciences
- JINS -- Joint Institute for Neutron Sciences
- SA -- Science Alliance
There is no information in Coeus or IRIS for the following currently funded units:
- CSYPV -- Center for the Study of Youth and Political Violence
- ORC -- Obesity Research Center
- SEERC -- Sustainable Energy Education and Research Center
Individual Unit Reports
Statistical data for individual unit reports is based on the following:
- The data for the Center for Biomarker Analysis and the Center for Environmental Biotechnology has been merged for all years.
- The data for the units that now comprise ISSE has been merged for all years as has the data for CITR.
- Proposal and award data comes from Coeus. Proposals are included in a particular year according to the date the proposal was created. Awards are included in a particular year according to the date the contract was signed locally.
- Proposal data was pulled using the Portal Report "Proposal List." Award data was pulled using the Portal Report "UTK Awards by Time Period." The award data for two centers changed slightly as the reports were being put together, so there is no guarantee that a new search will result in exactly the same numbers.
- Expenditure and F & A data comes from IRIS.
Five-Year Trend Analysis Charts
There are eight categories of Five-Year Trend Analysis Charts for currently funded units:
- Number of proposals submitted
- Proposal amounts
- Number of awards received
- Award amounts
- Expenditures
- Earned F & A
- Expenditures per dollar of research support
- Earned F & A per dollar of research support
Notes:
- “N/A” means that unit did not exist in a given year. A zero means that a center did exist but there was no activity. JICS is counted as existing in 2004 in all charts because it had awards in that year funded by proposals submitted from other units.
- Proposal counts and amounts exclude void or withdrawn proposals. JIBS is not included in the proposal charts because there was no proposal activity.
- Award counts and amounts exclude Center of Excellence funds. Award counts include sequences, so one award may be counted several times if the funds come in sequentially. JIBS is not included in the award charts because there was no activity.
- Expenditures are R accounts only and exclude Center of Excellence funds.
- University Support includes all central funding, returned F & A, carryover from the previous year, and any Center of Excellence funds that were provided. It does not include any percentage of faculty salaries.

These pie charts represent a five-year accumulation of types of funding sources. The Joint Institute for Advanced Materials was not included because it had only one award.
