NIH abandoning PureEdge, moving to Adobe forms in 2009
Faculty seeking funding from several NIH-related agencies will need to use new Adobe-based forms instead of the current PureEdge forms starting early in 2009.
The National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention/National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Food and Drug Administration will no longer accept most forms created by PureEdge on or after 1 January 2009, except as noted in the NIH notice announcing the change.
The Adobe-based forms in the grants.gov package will be available for download beginning in December 2008 for submissions with January 2009 deadlines. Researchers who are currently working on a submission due in January 2009 or later should continue to develop their research plan components and other parts of the applications, and prepare to upload them to the new Adobe-based form when it becomes available.
Important Note: The Adobe-based forms use Adobe Reader 8.1.2 or later. Earlier versions of Adobe will corrupt the package. The NIH has provided a web site that will automatically test for the appropriate version of the Reader.

UT’s open-access pilot program starts
A pilot program sponsored by University Libraries and the UT Office of Research will provide funding for UT Knoxville faculty and graduate students who need to pay article-processing charges as part of publication in an open-access journal.
The UT program has committed up to $20,000 to pay fees charged by open-access publishers. The program will extend through June 2009 or until the fund is exhausted. Any open-access publication that makes articles freely available at the time of initial publication will be considered.
Open-access publishing provides articles in digital format on the Internet at no charge to users. Like traditional journal publications, open-access publications are peer-reviewed. The cost of publication in open-access journals is generally less than that of comparable printed journals.
The Office of Research and UT Libraries will be evaluating the program’s usefulness. A description of the program, a list of open-access publishers, and an application form are available at http://www.lib.utk.edu/openpub/.
Demonstration of Digital Commons scheduled
The University Libraries will host a demonstration of Digital Commons, a digital archiving and publishing program at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, in John C. Hodges Library, Room 128. Digital Commons (developed by Berkeley Electronic Press) and similar publishing services enhance international collaboration and global academic networks. Many universities are building digital collections of papers, conference presentations, reports, images, performances and exhibitions, theses and dissertations, and other multimedia works to increase the visibility of faculty scholarship and provide a platform for scholarly publishing.
Day-long bio-imaging symposium planned
The fifth annual Memphis BioImaging Symposium will take place November 6–7 at the Fogelman Executive Conference Center in Memphis. Hosted by the UT Health Science Center and other institutions and corporations in Memphis, the symposium targets faculty and students in bioengineering and research, medical physicists, oncologists, radiologists, and others interested in the latest trends in bioimaging research.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Opportunities
NSF to emphasize intersection of physical, life sciences
The Directorate of Biological Sciences in the National Science Foundation has announced a new focus for interdisciplinary research that studies issues at the intersection of the physical and life sciences. The new emphasis was announced in a "Dear Colleague" letter released on October 17, 2008.
The directorate will give priority to projects that address fundamental questions about "Life in Transition" (LiT), including identifying how the living world has adapted to and is transforming Earth’s climate, how living systems obtain and use energy, and what the origins and indispensable properties of life are. LiT is not a new program or special competition but is to be submitted under traditional programs of the directorate. The emphasis will end in 2011.

Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation
The NSF is accepting EFRI proposals in two new research areas: BioSensing and BioActuation (BSBA) and Hydrocarbons from Biomass (HYBi). The EFRI program solicits proposals with transformative ideas that represent a significant shift in fundamental engineering knowledge and a potential for long-term impact on national needs.

Plant Genome Research Program 2009
The NSF Plant Genome Research Program will support four kinds of research in FY 2009: genome-enabled plant research addressing major unanswered questions, transfer of research from model systems to the study of the basic biology of plants of economic importance, development of novel technologies and tools for plant genomics research, and Heterosis Challenge Grants to support testing hypotheses for the mechanisms of heterosis in plants.

NIST seeks white papers on future research possibilities
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is soliciting suggestions on areas of critical national and societal needs that could be addressed by transformative new technologies. The white papers will be considered for incorporation in future competitions for funding the NIST Technology Innovation Program.
"These white papers may be an opportunity for faculty to influence the development of new research topics in future compeititons," said Paul Montgomery, UT director of external relations. In 2008 the TIP program focused on the U.S. infrastructure.

We the People proposals solicited
The National Endowment for the Humanities is soliciting proposals for its We the People Challenge Grants in U.S. History, Institutions, and Culture. Projects under this program are meant to help institutions and organizations make long-term improvements in and win support for humanities activities that examine American history through the lens of the nation’s founding principles. Proposals must demonstrate how the challenge grant would strengthen the institution’s ability to explore significant themes and events in American history. Recipients of the award must raise three times the amount of the federal award toward accomplishing the project.
