Chancellor’s Grants for Faculty Research
Chancellor’s Grants for Faculty Research support a course release for faculty in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and applied social sciences. While these grants serve as internal faculty awards, providing time for research, writing, or creative work, they also mandate the submission of fellowship or grant proposals to external funding sources.
All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty at the rank of assistant professor or above are eligible to apply for a course release in the spring or fall semester of 2010. Up to twelve grants of up to $6,000 each will be made to the applicant’s department or equivalent academic unit.
How to Apply
Internal proposals for the grants should be submitted by October 2, 2009. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-October. An original and seven (7) copies of the proposal, including the following components, should be submitted to Alan Rutenberg (arutenberg@utk.edu) in the Office of Research:
- A cover sheet, stating the name, faculty rank, and department of the applicant, the title of the research or creative project, and the proposed semester for the course release
- A narrative of no more than 1,500 words that includes the following:
- A description of the research project or creative work, including the significance of the proposed work and its impact on the applicant’s discipline
- A description of the additional increment of research, writing or creative work to be achieved during the course release period
- A list of external funding sources to be pursued, and proposed dates of submission
- Vita of applicant (5 page limit).
- A record of leave and release time over the past three years.
- Endorsement letters from department head and dean. Endorsement letters are a critical part of the application package. They should justify the semester specified for leave as appropriate in the scholarly progression of the applicant, and should also provide insight to the reviewers about factors that distinguish this applicant from others.
Selection
A Grant Committee will evaluate the proposals and make recommendations for grants. The Committee will include representation from the eligible academic areas and the Office of Research.
