Date: Wednesday, May 31 - Wednesday, August 9

Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Location: A004 Blount Hall (BLNT)

Eligibility: The Proposal Writing Institute is designed for faculty who are eligible to serve as the principal investigator on a proposal submitted by UT Knoxville to the NIH.

The Summer 2017 NIH Proposal Writing Institute (PWI) is an intensive program designed to position faculty participants to submit a proposal as early as the fall NIH submission deadlines. The NIH PWI combines a series of workshops with a sequence of writing assignments and individualized proposal development support by the Faculty Development Team (FDT). The goal is for each participant to have a complete draft proposal by the end of the PWI.

Topics will include things like how to select the right R-mechanism for your proposal, how to identify an appropriate study section, the structure of an NIH proposal, budgeting, identifying and conveying the health impact of your research, and complying with the rigor and reproducibility requirements.

Attendees should have a well-developed research project in mind prior to the first session. Identification of a target Institute and prior communication with a program officer is preferable.

The PWI will consist of six workshops and a peer review session, all of which will be held between May 31 and August 16. Each session will be held on a Wednesday from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. in A004 Blount Hall. The tentative workshop schedule is:

  • May 31
  • June 14
  • June 28
  • July 12
  • July 26
  • August 9

Registration deadline: May 26, 2017
